A Little Bit about Me!

I started fishing with my father at the age of 5 or 6, catching small roach or gudgeon and had improved well enough to start my match fishing apprenticeship by the age of about 12. By 13, I was fishing for a senior team. I had good results on the lakes of South Wales, the river Wye and the Bristol Avon, to name but a few.I won the Junior Welsh National on the river Dee and was the youngest angler at the time to fish the Fourth Division National. At 15, I was selected to fish for Wales in the Senior World Championships but in those days before corporate sponsorship the cost was prohibitive.
At 16, I left school to follow my passion and work full time in the angling industry in the family fishing tackle shop. For 10 years I custom built top quality rods for coarse, sea and game, tied flies for sale, serviced and repaired reels of all kinds and repaired broken rods to a high standard, as well as offering excellent retail customer care. In my spare time, in search of a new challenge, I took to fishing the river Usk for its huge dace and monster chub and the river Wye for its chub and barbel with great success, catching 100’s of 9lb plus and bags of barbel up to 25 per session – only ever 1 10lb plus barbel though! I also caught more than my fair share of chub to over 6lb.
30lb 4oz Winter 2009
After these successes, I took up carp and pike fishing with my British PB for carp being 23lb4oz on dog biscuit and river pike to 20lb at Symmonds Yat on the river Wye. I moved to Portugal in September 2003 and have spent the time since then researching the lakes and rivers. I now fish the smaller dams of the Alentejo area and have had carp to 37.5lb and a lot of 20’s, all mirrors. The fish, although stocked are more like natural fish, harder to catch and many have never been caught before, providing a unique challenge. Reliable accounts and sightings say monster carp of 70lb are waiting. Take a look at the Photo Gallery for a selection of catches – regularly updated – and see the beautiful unspoilt scenery I am lucky enough to fish in. See you on the bank soon!
